September Birding Big Day around The Route of 100 Birds (Costa del Sol, Malaga, Andalucia, Southern Spain)

More than 100 birds recorded again, though not many more this time!

Photo: Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus)

Have a look at more pictures and the complete list of 101 birds observed below!

The Tawny Owl sweetly hooted for some time after I arrived at Montes de Malaga at 7:00, one and a half hours before dawn. It was answered with some calls by another one a few umbrella pines away. The first one flew (I suppose!) there, hooted from its new position for a while and, once the family was reunited, silence came back to the forest.

Today, before the morning chorus started, a Woodlark sang from the nearby hills, something that had not happened since spring.

We have not recorded any unexpected birds today.

As it was Saturday, I could not access to El Torcal as the car park was already full when I arrived. This might have taken a few mountain species from the list, but gave us some more time to cover the other destinations.

There was a big passage of Yellow Wagtails at Fuente de Piedra, where we could also pot Wheatear, Whinchat and Tawny Pipit, three of the birds we can only see on passage over here.

The Valley of the Guadalhorce left a distant Black Stork airborne over the river and my first Bluethroat of the season while the mouth of the river has already welcomed our every winter Osprey.

You can also live these experiences with us !!!
