Olaf and Marina's birding holidays around The Route of 100 Birds

We have registered 114 different species during our birding week around The Route of 100 Birds and The Straits based at Hotel Humaina in Montes de Malaga.

Photo: Little Owl (Athene noctua)

Have a look at many more pictures and the complete list of 114 species observed below!

Our first day took us to The Straits and La Janda to enjoy the last days of the big bird migration to Africa. We had incredible views of Booted and Short-toed Eagles, Black and White Storks, Night Herons and small typical Mediterranean birds like the Zitting Cisticola. We had to visit the beach of Barbate to find the Bald Ibis but it was worth it.

We spent the second day at El Torcal and the Fuente de Piedra Lake and had great views of Little Owl, Thekla Lark, White-headed Duck, Marsh Harriers and, of course, Greater Flamingos.

In the third day we visited Malaga Northeast District, including the beautiful river forest of the Hoz de Marin and the stunning foothills of Chamizo Peak for Red Deers and forest birds like woodpeckers, Common Crossbills and Hawfinches.

Our fourth day goal was the inevitable walk around El Chorro, with impressive views of vultures, including an Egyptian one, and Black Wheatears.

Our final trip was to the Mouth of the Guadalhorce and Zapata, where Booted Eagles were very active, we could enjoy the Osprey, Pintails (not a very common duck here!), Bluethroat and still some little birds on passage like Redstart and Spotted Flycatcher.

Some much desired birds did not show up this time but... there has to be a reason to come back!, and having Olaf and Marina again around here will be a real pleasure for us.

You can also live these experiences with us !!!
