Birds of the Mouth of the Guadalhorce Nature Reserve (Costa del Sol, Malaga, Andalucia, Spain)

White-headed Duck’s kingdom

urban birding in malagaProtection status:

  • Natural Area (Paraje Natural de la Desembocadura del Guadalhorce), Andalusian Wetland.

The mouth of the Guadalhorce is the last stronghold of a vast marsh in the past. Here breed our White-headed Ducks and we can see Booted Eagle, Common Buzzard, Marsh Harrier, Osprey, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk in a single morning, and even the Short-eared Owl in winter dusks.

White-headed Ducks, Cattle and Little Egrets, Grey Herons, Black-winged Stilts, Kentish Plovers, Hoopoes, Cetti’s Warblers and Zitting Cisticolas are present all year round. Little Bitterns, Audouin’s Gulls and Bee-aeters can be observed in summer. The population of ducks and waders escalates in winter.

Ornithologists say that you can spot any bird at the mouth of the Guadalhorce specially during the passage periods. This statement is supported by the SEO (Sociedad Española de Ornitología) records.

After the heavy floods occurred in Malaga in 1989, the plans for channeling the mouth of the river seriously endangered the future of this site. Even though the surroundings of the mouth and the ponds suffered an important transformation after the works, the fact is that the site has been converted into an island which is much better protected, comfortable birding hides have been set, and some of the problems reported in the past, such as chemical and sewage dumping, as well as the low level of waters in the river, have been solved thanks to the sewage plant built just north of the site.

Trip duration: Half day (Guadalhorce) or Full day (Guadalhorce + Rio Grande)
