Birding the Strait from the Costa del Sol (Andalucia, Spain)

The amazing spectacle of bird migration

img estrecho

Protection status:

  • Natural Park (Parque Natural del Estrecho), Special Bird Protection Area (ES0000337), Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean.

The Strait of Gibraltar is a bridge between summer and winter and the migration of birds across it is a magnificent spectacle of nature.

Raptors and storks gather together in big numbers and wait for favourable winds to go across the strait in autumn. At spring time, we can wait for those same birds coming from Africa, some of them exhausted and sometimes chased to death by seagulls.

La Janda was formerly a big lake turned into paddy fields and farmlands during the last century’s 40’s and 50’s. It is a roosting place for migrating birds and a great wintering headquarters for storks, cranes, waterfowl and waders.

Trip duration: Full day (Strait of Gibraltar or Strait of Gibraltar + La Janda)

Birds of Archidona (Costa del Sol, Malaga, Andalucia, Spain)

Mountains, woods, lakes and rivers together

cabecera archidona

Protection status:

  • Lagunas de Archidona: Nature Reserve, Ramsar Wetland
  • Sierra de Camarolos: Site of Community Importance (ES6170012)

Archidona is the largest village northeast of Malaga province. It is surrounded to the south by the Sierra de Camarolos with 1.600 m high peaks, house of the Golden Eagle, Choughs and Griffon Vultures. Nice woods of Andalucian Oaks and maples extend at the foothills where some typical birds like Cirl Buntings and Common Crossbills are present all year round.

There is a fantastic Mediterranean Holm Oak forest near the village, home of Azure-winged Magpies, Goshawks, Dartford Warblers and Firecrests, and also the breeding quarters of Booted And Short-toed eagles, Western Bonelli’s Warblers and Hoopoes. This forest grows around two little lakes called Lagunas de Archidona, hosting Great-crested and Little Grebes, Coots and any surprise during the passage periods.

Two streams, the upper reaches of the Guadalhorce River and the Arroyo Marin, have sculpted their own gorges through the mountains. The higher ridges are dominated by Bonelli’s Eagles, while the fresh riverbank woodlands are inhabited by woodpeckers, Hawfinches, Nightingales and even Rock Sparrows and Pigeons, Black Wheatears and Blue Rock Thrushes in the rocky walls of the gorges.

Trip duration: Half day (Hoz de Marin and Garganta del Guadalhorce) or Full day (Foothills of Sierra de Camarolos, Lagunas de Archidona, Hoz de Marin and Garganta del Guadalhorce)

Birds of El Chorro (Costa del Sol, Malaga, Andalucia, Spain)

Feel the vultures

img el chorro

Protection status:

  • Natural Site (Paraje Natural del Desfiladero de Los Gaitanes), Special Bird Protection Area (ES617003)

El Chorro is an impressive site where mountains with very high cliffs and wide pinewoods converge with three big water reservoirs.

The cliffs of El Chorro take in a dense population of Griffon Vultures, livened up by the always noisy Choughs. The Peregrine, Rock Bunting, Black Wheatear, Blue Rock Thrush, Dartford Warbler and Crag Martin also live here. They are joined by Egyptian Vultures, Short Toed Eagles and Alpine Swifts in summer. The Bonelli’s Eagle uses to fly above the peaks.

Woods surrounding the reservoirs host Crested Tits, Firecrests and Common Crossbills.

The reservoirs do not host a very dense population of birds. Nevertheless, Great Crested Grebes and Cormorants are common with some Ospreys wandering in winter.

This trip requires a little long but pleasant walk to the top of a cliff by a comfortable track through the pinetree forest and the Mediterranean scrubland.

Trip duration: Half day (El Chorro) or Full day (El Chorro + Rio Grande)

Birds of El Torcal (Costa del Sol, Malaga, Andalucia, Spain)

Birds on magical rocks

img el torcal

Protection status:

  • Natural Site (Paraje Natural del Torcal de Antequera), Special Bird Protection Area (ES0000032), UNESCO World Heritage.

El Torcal is a magical labyrinth of whimsically shaped rocks inhabited by Blue Rock Thrushes, Rock Buntings and Rock Sparrows.

It extends over a plateau on top of vertiginous cliffs home for Griffon Vultures, Bonelli’s Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Choughs and Rock Doves.

In summer, the population of birds is completed with Black-eared Wheatears, Subalpine and Melodious Warblers and Woodchat Shrikes. In winter, Song Thrushes, Redwings and Ring Ouzels find in Hawthorn and Bramble a fortifying source of energy after their long travels from the north.

El Torcal is one of the most important karst samples of Europe. It was the first natural site protected in Andalusia in 1929.

Birds of Malaga city (Costa del Sol, Malaga, Andalucia, Spain)

Birds and culture

img malaga city

David Lindo Malaga May 2015

Aug 13th, 2017: Malaga, among the six cities that are unexpected havens for birdwatching (David Lindo, The Telegraph)

Jan 7th, 2016: The New York Times includes Malaga in the list of must-visit destinations in 2016

Malaga is a very old town. Romans, Muslims and Christians made their mark along the centuries.

The Romans left a tribute to culture with a theatre promoted by Caesar Augustus in 1st century B.C. Black Wheatears and Blue Rock Thrushes are common visitors to its old stone stands.

During the 10th century, the Muslims built a palatial fortress (La Alcazaba) and a castle (Gibralfaro) on top of the highest hill of the city. They are nowadays surrounded by gardens at the lower end, and a pine tree forest at the top. Finches, including Common Crossbills, tits and flycatchers will be good company on our way up to the view points to the harbour and the bay. The Tawny Owls use to hoot at night.

urban birding in malagaThe construction of the Cathedral took more than two centuries after the city was conquered to the Muslims at the end of the 15th century and it is still an unfinished building as one of its towers is incomplete. The Cathedral owes its local appellative, La Manquita (The Little One-handed) to this fact. Peregrine Falcons are the kings of the tower, with Kestrels, Yellow-legged Gulls, Spotless Starlings and pigeons living at lower levels.

The Paseo del Parque, a wonderful local and subtropical plants garden, was grown on lands reclaimed from the sea for the expansion of the harbour by the end of the 19th century. It hosts warblers, treecreepers, Robins and the typical parakeets. Scops Owls hoot at torrid summer nights.

Apart from its value as a birdwatching place, Malaga city is a very good base for your birding holidays around this region.

Trip duration: Half day (Malaga city) or Full day (Malaga city + Mouth of the Guadalhorce or Malaga city + Montes de Malaga)

Birds of Rio Grande (Costa del Sol, Malaga, Andalucia, Spain)

A Heron´s paradise

img rio grande

The Río Grande springs up in the Sierra de las Nieves and grows downstream as a vein of life to become the main tributary to the river Guadalhorce.

The final course of Rio Grande, where it joins the Guadalhorce amongst lemon and orange groves, is a place of reference for watching ardeids, hosting Grey and Night Herons and Little and Cattle Egrets all year, with Squacco Herons in summer and Great Egrets in winter. The six of them may happen together in the passage periods.

It is home of Black Storks in winter and other birds like Red-necked Nightjars, Bee-eaters, Red-rumped Swallows, Isabelline Warblers and Golden Orioles find perfect conditions for breeding in summer.

Birds of the Andalusian steppe (Sevilla, Andalucia, Spain)

Where Great Bustards dance in the sun

DSCN8513 c

Protection status:

  • Complejo Endorreico de La Lantejuela: Nature Reserve, Site of Community Importance (ES6180002)
  • Campiñas de Sevilla (Osuna): Special Bird Protection Area (ES6180017)

The Andalucian steppe is the perfect habitat for the Great Bustard, the heaviest European flying bird. Along with the Great Bustard, the farmlands around the nice town of Osuna are home for Black-winged Kites, Little Bustards, Stone Curlews, Black-bellied Sandgrouses, Calandra Larks, Iberian Grey Shrikes and Spanish Sparrows all year round.

Migratory birds, specially waders and waterfowl, find in the numerous pools scattered around the farmlands perfect resting places in their flyways from and to the continent. Not surprisingly, lots of amazing birds will choose this area as their breeding quarters as it is the case of Black Kites, Montagu’s Harriers, Lesser Kestrels, Collared Pratincoles, Gull-billed, Black and Whiskered Terns, Bee-eaters and Red-rumped Swallows.

Birds of the Mouth of the Guadalhorce Nature Reserve (Costa del Sol, Malaga, Andalucia, Spain)

White-headed Duck’s kingdom

img desembocadura gualhorce

urban birding in malagaProtection status:

  • Natural Area (Paraje Natural de la Desembocadura del Guadalhorce), Andalusian Wetland.

The mouth of the Guadalhorce is the last stronghold of a vast marsh in the past. Here breed our White-headed Ducks and we can see Booted Eagle, Common Buzzard, Marsh Harrier, Osprey, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk in a single morning, and even the Short-eared Owl in winter dusks.

White-headed Ducks, Cattle and Little Egrets, Grey Herons, Black-winged Stilts, Kentish Plovers, Hoopoes, Cetti’s Warblers and Zitting Cisticolas are present all year round. Little Bitterns, Audouin’s Gulls and Bee-aeters can be observed in summer. The population of ducks and waders escalates in winter.

Ornithologists say that you can spot any bird at the mouth of the Guadalhorce specially during the passage periods. This statement is supported by the SEO (Sociedad Española de Ornitología) records.

After the heavy floods occurred in Malaga in 1989, the plans for channeling the mouth of the river seriously endangered the future of this site. Even though the surroundings of the mouth and the ponds suffered an important transformation after the works, the fact is that the site has been converted into an island which is much better protected, comfortable birding hides have been set, and some of the problems reported in the past, such as chemical and sewage dumping, as well as the low level of waters in the river, have been solved thanks to the sewage plant built just north of the site.

Birds of the Valley of the Guadalhorce (Costa del Sol, Malaga, Andalucia, Spain)

Guad-al-horce means "the silently flowing river"...

img rio grande

Protection status: : Site of Community Importance (Ríos Guadalhorce, Fahala y Pereilas – ES6170033)

Once the Guadalhorce noisily runs through Los Gaitanes Gorge (El Chorro), it becomes a peaceful vein of life across lemon and orange groves softly meandering towards the Mediterranean.

This valley is a place of reference for watching ardeids, hosting Grey and Night Herons and Little and Cattle Egrets all year, with Squacco and Purple Herons on passage, and Great Egrets in winter. The seven of them may happen together during the passage periods.

It is home of Black Storks in winter and other birds like Red-necked Nightjars, Bee-eaters, Red-rumped Swallows, Olivaceous Warblers and Golden Orioles find perfect conditions for breeding in summer.

Trip duration: Half day (Valley of the Guadalhorce) or Full day (Valley + Mouth of the Guadalhorce or Valley of the Guadalhorce + El Chorro)
